Defensive coordinator Shane Bowen’s unit appeared unprepared for the season opener. On a critical 99-yard scoring drive, the Giants were in man coverage on four out of the seven pass plays. This included a 44-yard completion to Justin Jefferson, where Deonte Banks was covering, and a touchdown pass to Jefferson on fourth down, again with Banks in coverage. I mentioned this because you have a rookie safety, Banks is in his second year, Flott playing out of position, Nick Mccloud with his 12th start in 4 years, you would figure he would want to make it as simple as possible for them. On the touchdown play, a linebacker took off in motion, leaving Banks isolated against one of the top wide receivers in the league. You would think safety Nubin would have taking that over being on the other side, and having help inside for banks on Jefferson. Instead they have Nubin covering grass not sure to pressure the QB or do nothing, the the linebacker taking off across the field, which he never would have gotten to anyways. Also look at Flott, he appeared lost in the slot on who he is suppose to cover, Darnold if he wanted to, could have thrown it to Addison for the TD. Its just a mess all around. Video below
I mentioned in a different article about how they did not give Dru Phillips more chances even though he was playing well. It looked like the moments he had he deserved to play more. He did cause a fumble early in the game, but here is a big 3rd down play he made in man coverage. PFF graded him for his 16 plays above 80. Once you are done watching Phillips make a great play, can you try and figure out what the safeties are suppose to be doing. It looks like a 2 man, but I cannot tell who they are helping out or what they are reading. Video below
The Giants’ defense, which was expected to be a cornerstone of the team this season, must address its glaring issues swiftly. The lack of preparation and communication was evident in key moments, particularly during critical drives where they allowed significant yardage and crucial touchdowns
